hi all,
can i have some feedback on how long it takes for you to restore 3 GB of data using netbackup datacenter 3.4 ?
thanks

Depending on the tape drive. I use both LTO and DLT 7000. With the LTO I can restore 3GB in about 5 minutes. With a DLT 7000 it takes me about 12 minutes.

i am using a DLT 40/80, it took me 5+hrs to restore only 3.3GB of data!
any idea?

OUCH! You need to be more descriptive.

How are your backups done?

What Version of NBU?

How do you have the Tape Drive Connected?

If SCSI connected what controller are you using? Is it on the same channel as the disk?

How are your backups done?
backup is done using multi-streaming on server1

What Version of NBU?
3.4

How do you have the Tape Drive Connected?
directly connected to the win2000 server2 for restore

If SCSI connected what controller are you using? Is it on the same channel as the disk?
how to check this?

Sentmemail,
What type of SCSI controller are you using to connect your tape drive to? Is it a onboard controller, or a PCI controller? To check if it is connected on the same SCSI Channel/BUS as your disk, simply look how your drives are connected and if you tape is connected to the same controller in the back.

First off, you need to describe your environment better for anyone to help you out.

Is the tape drive connected on the same controller as your disk?

Do you have the proper drivers installed for the SCSI card?

How are your multiplexing backups performed?

How was the backup created?

Is the server you are restoring the NBU Master?

Just be completely detailed about your environment?

Is the tape drive connected on the same controller as your disk?
nope, different controller
Do you have the proper drivers installed for the SCSI card?
yes

How are your multiplexing backups performed?
set to 6 multiplexing

How was the backup created?
full backup

Is the server you are restoring the NBU Master?
yes

Well for one, your multiplex is set way to high for a DLT drive connected to a PCI controller. You should only Multiplex by the number of physical DISK on each controller. So if you have a D:\ drive on one SCSI controller and a C:\ on a seperate disk and controller you should only multiplex 2. Multiplexing/Streaming will seriously hurt restore performance.

comtec17,
i am only backing up a single 150GB drive.
how should i configure multiplexing?

How many partitions are on the drive and what are they?

I am guessing here but is your drive IDE?

What brand and model of SCSI controller are you using for the tape drive?

How are your streams setup to backup?

How many partitions are on the drive and what are they?
1 partition made up of 5 scsi hdd (raid 5)

What brand and model of SCSI controller are you using for the tape drive?
compaq 40/80

How are your streams setup to backup?
currently i am breaking up 150GB into 5 streams of 30GB

What brand and model of SCSI controller are you using for the tape drive?
compaq 40/80 This is the tape drive, I need to know the model of the SCSI RAID Controller.

How are your streams setup to backup?
currently i am breaking up 150GB into 5 streams of 30GB - You should not use multi-streaming for this. This is considered 1 physical Drive and should only be multistreamed x 1.

if i were to set multistreamed x 1 the backup will run for 14hrs instead of the current 9 hrs.
any help to improve the backup duration?

One thing I always mention and it is nearly always forgotten - Do you have anti-virus software running? I have seen restores take hours instead of minutes because of anti-virus software.

You have not answered a few questions that have been asked:

What SCSI controller are you using - Specifics, brand, model etc?
What driver are you using for that controller?
In backing up, did you use multiplexing/streaming?
What model and make of tape drive are you using, specifics, not just LTO, DLT etc, Make and model?
What driver version are you using for the for the tape drive?

Please read the responses as people can only help if you provide specifics and general statements do not help as certain condition can create problems and to narrow down, specifics must be provided.
