Resource Usage info in Gantt view

I have a programme showing a number of projects with people assigned to tasks from a resource pool. their hours predicted / worked are then entered into the task usage view generating the gantt chart view.

i would like to know if there is anyway of taking the information in the resource usage view and displaying it in gannt chart format? so i can track graphically the hours worked per person as well as per task?

Short answer, long answer, best answer:

Short answer: no.

Long answer: Here's something you can play around with. If you assign only a single resource to a task, then you can display the Calendar view, click on a blank date (a Sunday is usually a good idea), click on Format | Bar Styles. click on Non Critial, and in the Text (below) set "Field(s)" to Resource Name. Then, click on Project | Sort | Sort by ... and set the first sort criteria to Resource Names. It's not quite what you want (a Gantt view) but it's as close as you're going to get.

Best answer: longtime visitors here know that my mantra is: if you want to create pretty pictures, use Visio; if you want to manage a project then use MS Project. The information you want is found in the Who Does What When report.

(Damn! I wish I could get a job where I was paid to make pretty pictures ... much, much easier than real work.)

I manage real, international projects but the people who pay me want pretty pictures as well as sats and reports... hence the question...

maybe i'm lucky getting to do both????? or maybe i just have to work twice as hard with the tools i have?? Not all of us have the easy job of presenting info to computer literate people, never mind ms project literate!

Any other suggestions other than copy and pasting into a new project?

Nope.

I suppose you could write a VB macro to export the data from Project to Excel (not a particularly difficult task until you come to TimePhaseData and even that is merely a try-try-try-and-eventually-you'll-get-the-code-to-work sort of thing.

No matter how long it takes, it will take less time to say "It's not available but I can give you a spreadsheet or I can show you the WhoDoesWhatWhen report."

That's what I'd do. If you're managing international projects then, if nothing else, you must have the skills to manage higher level executives' expectations. Unless you're with NASA, it's not rocket science.
