Hello everyone.

I have win 98-second edition connected to a zip driver and a printer. My computer freezes very frequently and I have to shut it down, many time from the CPU button. I opened start-->run-->"msconfig"-->startup and unchecked all applications beside scanregistry, taskmonitor, loadpowerprofile, and systemtray. Also, I hit ctrl+alt+delete and closed all programs beside explorer and systray. After rebooting my computer and checking "my computer"-->properties-->performance I get 95% of system resources. After opening a couple of word 2000 documents and maybe couple of browsers, the precentage goes down to under 50% and eventually the system freezes.

thank you so much for any type of help. Ilan.

Install Windows 2000. There is not a chance of recovery for Windows 98, as it is a poorly designed operating system, and there are no fixes for such problems. It could be anything. I'd also suggest to keep at least one of the "load power profiles" checked in MSCONFIG.

If you have nothing to lose (i.e. data) you can "up" your Virtual Memory and see if that helps:
-> double-click My Computer
-> double-click Control Panel
-> double-click on System
-> Select the "Performance" tab
-> Select the "Virtual Memory" button
-> Select the "Specify my own settings" radio button
-> enter the amount of physical RAM you have as the "MIN"
-> multiply the amount of physical RAM you currently have in your system by 2.5 and enter that in the "MAX" box

This should help to improve the overall performance. You could also run other helpful programs like DEFRAG and SCANDISK (thourough) and make sure that there's nothing actually wrong with the hard drive.

System resources have nothing to do with RAM, VRAM or disk space. Windows keeps two stacks in memory which holds the information about such things as open programs, settings, icons, fonts etc. This is a fixed amount of memory controlled by user.exe and gdi.exe. When these memory stacks get filled your computer will indeed freeze up. Most Windows programs frees that memory when closed. But some don't. That is what is being referred to when you read about memory or resource "leakage".
The only way to find out if any one program is a resource pig is to open it and then check system resources. It's a peculiar fault of Windows 4.x and there is nothing that I know of that you can do about it. I concur with jschrie that switching to Windows 2000 is the best option if you have it. Don Swayser

If you do decide to optimize your virtual memory, I would set the min = max which is 2 times the amount of RAM. The reason you want both to be equal is so that its size isn't constantly changing which eventually leads to fragmentation.

Also, if you have more than 256 MB of RAM, leave the VM setting to 512 MB. Don't set it any higher as this may actually degrade performance.

- go to start -> run
- type msconfig and hit enter
- go to the startup tab
- here, you can view all the apps that are starting with windows

*Be careful what you choose to uncheck. You'll probably want to keep scan registry, systray, loadpowerprofiles, and any antivirus software you have installed. If you're not sure, post back...

Sorry, but I'd would never suggest using winalign, it can cause problems. Too risky and it bloats executble files.

Winalign DOES NOT decrease application loading time when running a program! The only way you can speedup the loading times of your programs is by using Defrag to defragment all your fixed drives/partitions with the "Rearrange program files so my programs start faster" Defrag box checked.

The only program executables designed to be aligned by Winalign (so far) are written by Microsoft.
You MUST BE AWARE that by "aligning" a 3rd party program executable (NOT specifically designed to be used with WinAlign) without FIRST checking with the program's developer/vendor exposes YOU (as licensed/registered program
user) to a few RISKS:

- You may break a particular application (usually only slightly).
- You may break a program's ability to update using patch technology.
- You may be violating a license agreement by modifying copyrighted files.
