Can someone explain how to do resolve a domain name to an ip address on a 2000 Advanced Server (Domain Comtroller)

Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.

C:\>nslookup
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.1: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.1

> sample.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.1

Name: sample.com
Addresses: 192.168.0.1, x.x.x.x

Any help appreciated

Bill

You need to add valid DNS server addresses in the TCP/IP properties of the network card.

too funny, and yes iproute's response was correct.

you can launch nslookup and then type

server {name of a valid dns server}

e.g.

server ns1.the-onramp.net

etc.

this will just briefly test what other DNS servers are reporting as an IP <-> domain name. This helps me see if DNS caching and TTLs are too large for propagation of dns updates.
