I discovered the screen res on my Dell Dimension 2400 running xp/sp2 suddenly was altered to CGI quality 640x480 with 4 bit color. This did not occur after a reboot - I generally leave my pc on all the time - it sits behind a firewalled router on broadband. My mcAfee anti-virus is current and I ran hijack-this and found nothing unusual. I have other pc's hitched to the home network and none have this problem. I know it is not the video card because I have a dual boot to win2003 server on the same box but it does not have that problem. Stumped. At the point of reinstalling xp. Ideas????

Something may have corrupted the video card's drive for the XP install.

Try removing the drivers, and letting windows rediscover the video card.

Also you might want to go to the video card's manufacturer's website, and download their most recent drivers. Or go to Dell's website, and look for your model of Dell it should have the drivers available for download.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

I figured out that the downgrade in screen res was caused by the pc booting in safe mode. Problem solved. Case closed. Thanks for your help.
