resolution stays on 640 by 480 in xwindows 1

hey
i managed to configure x correctly. i used gnome and afterstep, both work fine. the only problem i have is my monitor. it stays on 640x480 mode and the window manager is on 1024x768. so the desktop doesn't fit inside the screen and i have to go outside of the desktop area and then the screen moves to other parts of the desktop. i this clear?
it's like my monitor doesn't understand it should go into 1024x768 mode and stays on 640x480 while the system is in 1024x768.
any ideas?

try to use [ctrl][alt][+] and [ctrl][alt][-] (+/- on the numeric keypad) and see if that changes resolution. if not, pase your XF86Config file here for further assistance.

apperantly i went through the config too fast and didn't notice that the first resolution i choose in the list is the default one. once i fixed that it worked fine. thanks a lot for the helpful tip. it's working great
