This is aggravating..

I have a sony vaio laptop with crystal clear display.. but the display is a little small... I have an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.. So I basically want to close the lid on it and use it as a tower.

The trouble is that no resolution shows up perfectly on the external monitor.. The text is always a little tall.

Is there any software that will let you set or add monitor resolutions to windows? Such as.. instead of 1024x768... Add 1024x730?

Thanks..

Right-click a blank area of the desktop, properties, settings and try adjusting the DPI setting.

There is a certain logic to the default settings based on the vertical and horizontal aspect ratios of the underlying fonts and icons.

A possible workaround if you haven't tried it, follow these steps:
1. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab.
2. Click the Advanced button.
3. Click the Adapter tab, and then click the List all modes button.
4. Select the resolution, color depth, and refresh rate that you want and click OK.

Maybe your Adapter has something like "1088 x 612" if not "1024 x 730"?

Can you do anything with the manual Height/Width settings, usually found on the front of the Monitor?

This procedure applies when two or more monitors are connected to one computer.

1. Open Display in Control Panel.

2. On the Settings tab, click the monitor icon that represents the monitor whose screen resolution you want to change.

3. In Screen resolution, drag the slider to set the resolution you want to use for the selected monitor, and then click OK or Apply to view changes.

Notes:

• To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.
• If you click a secondary monitor and the Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor check box is not selected, you cannot change the settings of that monitor.
• A higher screen resolution reduces the size of items on your screen and increases the size of your desktop.
• Each monitor has its own screen resolution settings.
• Your monitor and video adapter determine how much you can change your screen resolution. You may not be able to increase the resolution above a certain level.
• Changes to screen resolution affect all users that log on to the computer.

Being a notebook, your chipset probably does not support custom resolutions. You could go ahead try a utility like PowerStrip anyway however.
