I would like to be able to resize my sys volume without having to destroy the volume. I have found that Powerquest has a produce server magic whihc alloes this does anyone know where i can get a package that does this but is freeware.
Also I have a drive that has free space but this free space is not shown as novell free space, so I can't see this free space when I wish to add free space to existing volumes. Is there a way to resolve this without having to shut the server done and use something like fdisk.

If you have space free on your existing disk, you can add the free space to the SYS volume by using INSTALL.

You also need to make sure that the drivers are loaded for the additional disk (whether they be SCSI or IDE) so that NetWare can see the additional disk. Once NetWare can see the additional disk, you can use INSTALL again to firstly create a NetWare partition on the disk, and secondly add diskspace to SYS as required.

All this can be achieved without an outage (providing the additional disk is already connected). -----------------------------------------------------

If the free space is on the same physical drive, you cannot use it with NW4. NW4 only allows 1 partition per physical disk.

NW5 and up allow more so you could create another NetWare partition with the free space, and add that new partition to the SYS volume.

Hi Thnoss,

I have used PowerQuset ServerMagic many times and I must say it's great. If you want to reduce the size of an existing volume, including SYS, that's the way to go.

You will need to create a NetWare partition on the other drive in order to use it as NetWare free space and to create a volume or add to a volume.

rjs - let me rephrase - "if the server has free space in the NetWare partition, then that space can be added to the volume". -----------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the response guys.

A little more detail may help, the drive I had my sys volume running on was crashing so what I had to do was ghost the drive onto another drive. The problem seems to be that the physical drive size was different between the two drives, so in the ghost the original source disk size was created as a netware volume on the target drive and the remaining space on the target drive was displayed as free space in fdisk, but as I say I cannot see it in install.

From all your responses I see that I may need to get a hold of server magic, rjs if server magic is able to expand the netware partition, this should resolve the problem you mentioned about NW4 allowing only one partition per drive.

Thanks for the help
Thnoss
