i'm a complete novice to this program and have been given a file that is tabloid in print size; however, the print guides/bounding box/whatever you call it, is smaller than the image and therefore prints only a portion of the thing. aimless wandering thru the help section has not gotten me anywhere. i can 'move' the printable area 'box', but not resize it.

can someone clue me in? thanks!

Depends what operating system you are on and whether pc or mac, but on Windows 2000, AI 10, you should be able to find an advanced tab under print setup which would allow you to scale down to fit a smaller page. It may take a bit of trial and error, but once it prints scaled down, you will see that it fits within the print boundary guides.

Another option would be to select everything, group it, and scale as a unit down to fit whatever size you want.

It depends whether you want it to stay at tabloid size and you are just printing proofs on lettersize, or you want the art permanently smaller.

thanks for responding, but that's not actually my problem. i want the entire image to print but the printable area 'box' is smaller than the actual image. i'm looking for how you go about resizing that printable area.

(and yeah, Windows 2000, AI 10) - i tried selecting all the contents and simply created a new document and pasted the stuff in there. that at least got me a larger 'printable area'. although i have to wonder, as another document they just gave me ALSO has a printable area box slapped on it that is smaller than the image and ALL of that image prints with no problems.

needless to say i'm a bit confused. : /

You can only size the box to whatever the printer you selected can print. In the print dialogue box you should be able to choose Media size. Select 11x17 and your bounding box should change appropriately.
