I have the following problem

Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 42415 19612 18562 52% /
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s6 590910 388399 143420 74% /usr
/proc 0 0 0 0% /proc
fd 0 0 0 0% /dev/fd
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s1 26255 26200 0 100% /var
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s7 7883637 22 7804779 1% /export/home
/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s7 8759116 157545 8513980 2% /opt
swap 166504 16 166488 1% /tmp

as you can see /var is full and /export/home has tons of free space, how can I

1) reduce the size of /export/home?

2) increase the size of /var

The easiest way is to mv or tar up what little you have in /export/home and put it on /usr temporarily.

Next, use the format command to shrink /export /home. (format>select disk>partition)

make a new partition. Mount that new partition (don't forget newfs) in the /var directory. Preferrably in the directory with the most disk usage.

and don't forget to move the /export/home tarfile or directory back to its original.
