Residual Effects of Exporting a Sharepoint Site

I intend running an export of our sharepoint site using stsadm.exe.

I am running sharepoint 3.0 on an SBS 2008 server.

1.0 Could anyone tell me what the residual effects of running this process has on the source site?

e.g. is the sharepoint site still useable after this process is completed?

2.0 Can this be run while the site is in use?
