Resetting permissions on Root Directory from outside OS?

Is there any other way than the attib command to reset permissions on the win2k root directory from outside the OS?

I accidently removed the "system" account from the root permissions. Ran the repair tool but it only seems to have deleted the existing files without replacing them.

I can boot to the repair console and run the command attrib -r-s-h c:\ and it seems to take the command but that does not seem to change the permissions. I can't copy ntldr back to the root (get an access denied message) though I can copy files to other directories just fine.

Any ideas?

If repair didnt work, i cant think of any other way than a reinstall.

attrib doesnt modify the ntfs permissions.
why did u run repair after removing system account from the root folder ? you should have just readded the account.

If you cant boot win2k, cause nt bootloader files are missing and u cant boot. Load the recovery console and try the commands:
fixboot
fixmbr

if that doesnt work u have to reinstall

Thanks guys. Did not realize what had happened until after I had shut it down. One thing that bugs me though is that the admin account still has privileges to the root folder so why can't I copy files to it using the console? I think there must be something else going on. Maybe some kind of hardware issue.

Ran checkdsk and it came up with some problems which it fixed. However still can't get files into the root. I did use the fixboot command but this did not seem to help. Will try fixmbr as I had overlooked that one. It is looking like a re-install is probably in order.
