Recently I had to bring up a server that has not been in use for over a year. Needless to say the root password had been expired. I can get to single user mode, but it will not let me start up sam so I can reactivate. Is there a way to do this by command line? I tried "passwd root" but that doesn't work.

you should edit 2 files:

/etc/passwd - erase the * where the password should be.

I don't remember the another file and where is located (so much time off HP-UX) but a folder is "auth" (find it from /) and then find (from "auth" folder) the "root" file (filename: root) and erase the password contained in this file.

yes stephenwales, that's exactly the file I was talking about.

thansk a lot!
