my computer runs on windows 2000 professional and internet explorer 5.0 as a browser.when i want to connect to internet using my isp, it let me connect.i tried at least three different isp. i can also see the connection icon.but it do not displays any web page in browser window.instead gives an error page with window title as res://c:\winnt\system32\shdoclc.dll/dns error.htm
& "web page can not be displayed......"
dns error.
could anyone get me the reason/solution ?
thank you.

do you actually connect with your isp, what I mean is do you verify your username and password?? Or can you not get past that? If you cannot verify username and password, make sure that your hardware and cable etc are all ok. Jay~

yes.both the username & password are varified.i can see it in the progress bar of that window.i also can use yahoo messenger and msn messenger.but when browser is opened it do not displays any page except the error page.same is the case with netscape4.7 browser.

Once you can dial up and connect, its not a problem with your ISP (unfortunatly!!!) so I think there might be settings you have to change in IE to access the internet, usually the ISP create a file that changes them for you automaticly. See if you can ring or at least mail their tech support and they will provide exact settings for IE. Jay~

Try the Internet Explorer repair feature first. Go to Start>Settings>ControlPanel>Add/Remove Programs, scroll down until you see Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 & Internet Tools, click the Add/Remove button and select repair.

Truthfully, I'd be sure you've added the Service Packs or download IE6.

Looks like a possible problem with the dns server. Is there a setting for it under network properties, tcp/ip for the dialup adaptor? Try entering in the address box instead of a name. This ip address should take you to Tek-Tips, if it works then contact your isp to get the correct settings for dns.

You are not alone! If you go to and search for this you will see a whole thread on it. Microsoft has *acknowledged* the problem and their solution (which does not work) is to "close internet explorer and open it up again". There is a link to MS from the thread. Duh? Guess they figured noone would ever think to do that ; ) After traveling down the ISP tech support/modem checking route, I discovered it was neither. I took so many different steps to resolve the problem that I cannot single out the one thing that fixed it but here are some of the things you might try: (NOTE: Always backup your registry first!)

1. start > programs > accessories > system information. Click on "tools" and click the "repair internet explorer". (you will have to restart)
2. Removed IE 6, sp1. (restart)
3. Reinstalled IE 5.5 (restart)
4. Removed and reinstalled my TCP/IP
5. Reinstalled windows 98 (restart)
6. Removed Google toolbar enhancement for IE.
7. Removed IE all-together (restart) and now use Netscape! :-D

Good luck!

Whenever I get the message, i simply, Close all IE and Relaunch. Sap, i guess you launch IE first and then, dialup.
After that, when you refresh or going to a web, you get the error, right?

Close and Relaunch.
