I have an IP500V1 R7.0 Prefered Edition I want to upgrade it to R8.1.
The voicemail Pro is running on a windows server.
1) Do I need any additional hardware?
The VM pro will still running on the existing windows server or I will need an application server?
2) What licenses shall I need? Upgrade and Essential licenses?
3) What extra licenses or hardware is needed for one-X Mobile Essential?
4) What extra licenses or hardware is needed for one-X Mobile Preferred?

All you need to upgrade to 8.1 is an upgrade license (I would go for large system upgrade 270399 UK £123.00)

You can install One-X server (windows version) on your windows VM-Pro server and it work fine having both on the same server

As for One-X Mobile what do you want to do with it or do you just want mobile twinning

if you upgrade one x and have call assistant, after you upgrade the one x on the server you need to uninstall call assistant for each user then reinstall call assistant on each machine

The docs say that you will need an essential edition license as a perquisite for the preferred edition license.
The one-x mobile preferred (and all other user licenses) will need the preferred edition license as a prerequisite too.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

if you put a upgrade license on the system that has preferred edition you get a virtual essential license

Not anymore, this is documented for the later 8.1 releases.

Code:
4.1 Upgrading IP Office core software
When upgrading to Release 8.1 from a previous major release an upgrade licence is
required. It is recommended that the IP Office Release 8.1 Software Upgrade license is
installed before upgrading the system. Although the license key may not be recognized
immediately by the system running an earlier major release of software, it will be
recognized when the system is upgraded to Release 8.1.

Note: An IP Office 8.0 system with Essential Edition functioning but not enabled with the
required Essential Edition license key will have all telephony functionality disabled after
the 8.1 upgrade. It is important to verify the license information prior to upgrading. If
Essential Edition is not visible in the license summary, an Essential Edition license must
be purchased and installed prior to attempting the 8.1 upgrade.
The table below shows the necessary steps that must be taken to upgrade the IP Office
system to Release 8.1:

So upgrading requires:
1 upgrade license
2 essential edition license

The virtual essential edition license is OK but tight to the IP500!
When it breaks down you will need to order the essential edition and you prbably can guess that this never at the right time.
When you cannot order it because it is in a weekend then the IPO just does not work anymore.
Do the math and go for a real essential edition license.

Yea, I upgraded a customer from 8.0 to 8.1 and just used the Upgrade license and it created a Virtual Essential Edition Licence. BUT, as tlPeter said it is ties to the cabinet itself. This just completely doesn't make any sense to me what so ever. The customer I upgraded has Preferred and Advanced Edition. So, if the cabinet dies I have to tell them they have to purchase Essential Edition. I think they should make it to where it requires you to have one of the 3 (Essential, Preferred, or Advanced) in order to upgrade...

No you don't, just for up the replacement as R7 then add licence back and upgrade, you are back to a virtual licence :)

Andy is right but it takes some time to do this.

R8 also requires an essential edition licence though, also as you are saying "upgrade" that suggests it must be on R7 .... so you are doing what I suggested, in which case you may as well go to R8.1
