Looking for free LPD in order to IP print on small win98 network. Any help would be appreciated

If, by "free LPD", you mean the ability within a Windows 'command prompt' session to execute the 'lpr' command, I think that you can take the 'lpr.exe' file from a Windows NT (or perhaps later) version and install it on Win98.

Don't think this is sufficient if you want to specify TCP/IP ports when setting up a Windows printer though; perhaps copying some of the other files (lpdsvc.dll, lprmon.dll, lprhelp.dll, etc.) will allow this.

I believe you hit the nail on the head with regards to printing to a tcp/ip port. Canon offeres up a lpr port plugin for win9X I guess I was hoping for a similar plugin as my dos skill is weak at best.

Autonut,

As you've found out, Windows 98 does not come with the necessary software to print directly to a TCP/IP address the way you can in Windows 2000 or XP.

However, there is a way to do it:=

1) Download the following software from HP:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/hpspm98.exe

(Although this is designed for HP printers I've used it with other makes of printers as well, either connected directly or via Netgear and/or Edimax print servers.)

2) Next, install the printer as a local printer to your LPT port.

3) Once it is installed, open up the configuration settings (i.e. click on Start > Settings > Printers then right-click on the printer and select Properties).

4) Go to the DETAILS tab and click on the ADD PORT button.

5) If you installed the above software, under the "other" you should see "HP Standard TCP/IP port". Select that and type in the IP address of your network printer.

Hope this helps...

Looks exactly like what I'm looking for. Thanks for the help. I've some experience with a few HP drivers and utilities I just couldn't find this one. Thanks again!

Autonut,

My pleasure... just hope it's what you were looking for.

As an aside, HP revamped their online resources a month or so ago and, in the process, reduced the number of their support websites. As a result, this utility (and many other utilities, FAQ's and/or support info) has become quite hard (as in almost impossible!) to find.

Whilst I downloaded the utility a while ago (just in case), it took me quite some time to find it again on HP's newly revised support lineup.

If the utility works for you then I suggest you keep it safe somewhere in case you need it again. There's no guarantee at all that it will be easily available in future from HP.

Hope this helps...

Regards,

Rick
