I have a user that send out messages via a listserv daily. Just recently in the past week, he has been receiving the following error message for several users on the same Exchange 2003 server.

"Last error: 5.2.0 550 5.7.1 Requested action not taken: message refused"

I have checked the event logs and have not seen anything wrong. I've also check Microsoft's site an haven't found any known issues other than for a PIX firewall, which we don't have. Can anyone point me in a direction?

thanks

Not sure I follow where the messages are going to.

Is your user sending messages to people in your company or to people outside your company?

If the latter, then the likely situation is that the receiving domain has anti-spam that is blocking you. Contact their domain admin and have them white list you.

I hope you find this post helpful.

He's sending messages to people in the company through a listserv service. The messages look like they are reaching my Exchange server, but from the bounced message the user receives back the server is refusing the message. Is there somewhere in Exchange where I can view the logs?

How is this list serv setup? Does the user have rights to relay through your SMTP Virtual Server?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Not really sure how the listserve is set up. If I have not allowed that listserve to relay through my SMTP Virtual Server would that be the error message that would generate?

THat would depend on how the list serv works. I think you should investigate that first. Determine if your user is using some local client that relays through your SMTP server or if the messages are coming from the outside and getting blocked. WHat anti-spam are you using? Have you white listed the listserver?

I hope you find this post helpful.

The messages are definately coming from outside and my server is refusing them. But it's just from the listserv. Any other individual messages are going through just fine. We use Antigen on the Exchange Server as well as MS Intelligent Message Filter. Here is an example of the bounce:

Final-Recipient: rfc822; user@domain.com
Action: failed
Status: 5.2.0
Remote-MTA: DNS; mail.domain.com
Diagnostic-Code: SMTP; 550 5.7.1 Requested action not taken: message refused
Last-Attempt-Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2007 18:07:59 -0400 (EDT)

So is the message coming from your users email address but actually being sent from the listserv? Sounds like your Antigen is detecting a spoof attempt. Can you white list the listserv?

I hope you find this post helpful.

The wording "Requested action not taken: message refused", that sounds like connection filtering not merssage filtering.

I noticed in my "Intelligent Message Filtering" under Message Delivery Properties, I have the Gateway Blocking Configuration set with a SCL rating greater or equal to 8 and also, when blocking messages...i have it set to Reject. could that be the issue? if so, how would i set it so the listserv in question is set to bypass this rating?

Within Connection Filtering, I have a Global Accept config to accept anything coming from the listserv's ip..but it's still blocking.

INstead of rejecting, why don't you archive and see if the messages come in? Refer to my FAQ on managing IMF. faq955-6503

Thanks...question..have you heard of IMF Tune?
Also, with your tool, once you set the "SPAM" to resubmit, if it comes from the same source, would you have to continue to resubmit or will it remember and automatically be delivered?

The resubmit is a one time deal. But getting the messages trapped will let you see the SCL rating and maybe enable you to make changes to your IMF settings.

I hope you find this post helpful.
