this is a repost from linux(server) in the vain hope
someone could atleast shine a little light around!

Hi all,

I've got a sparc ultra10 with an extra PCI PGX64 ( based on the ATI Rage XL for which I can't find specs, only ATI Rage xxx) & it's got suse73 installed but XFree86 doesn't get started.
even during installation it couldn't run the X server.
My nvalias screen is the correct pci device, the PGX64 is /dev/fb0 but X just doesn't start..
From inside the XFconfig file I'm using the ati mach64 driver in the device section, the rest is standard output from xf86config but no matter which of the both PCI adresses I use (suspecting a problem in which is /dev/fb0)in the config file it always stops on error:
(EE) ATI unable to mmap() adapter registers,

and bails out saying it didn't find a screen.
I'm not 100% sure if it fails on a monitor detection error or at framebuffer level, videaocard error would always result in screen detection error I guess.

tried some sane monitor res & sizes to no avail,

scanpci does see both cards, ATI mach64 GR and ATI mach64 GT, the GT should be the pgx64 aka ATI Rage.
The monitor i'm using is a standard sun 19" CM751U -SU type which should handle most things thrown at it.

fbset finds on /dev/fb0 the mach64 GT, but strangely it finds the also a mach64 GT on /dev/fb1.
No trace of the GR even with fbset -fb /dev/fb1 -i although the adresses & sizes are different, i'm suspecting the /dev/fb1 is the original on-board video card which I don't need.

running suse73 for sparc since that was the only correct md5sum iso I d/l but I suspect with other distro's & PGX64 XFree86 would give the same results on this particular machine.

any help welcome!
