hello

I have been working in CR8.5. I use crystal sql designer for native oracle sql. Write your oracle sql and paste it right in. I think the CR sql point and click stinks.
We may be going to CRXI. My understanding is that you can no longer use oracle sql in a report. Now, you must use a ref cursor if you want to write anything in the underlying DB sql script. Is this correct?
We may be using EnterpriseXI for the CRXI reports here. Does that impact database interrogation?

Hi,
Not exactly..
You can use the Command object option ( shown in the Database connection options after logging on to the datasource) instead of a Table or View as the datasource for the report..

I would recommend that you use only the Oracle Native connection method ( Oracle Server in your list of connection options) when using Sql commands directly..It will insure compatibility with Oracle's features..

Command object option

Im not familiar w/ Command object option and it doesnt come up in CR8.5 on a help search.

Does it perform the same function as the old crystal sql designer.
Can you still create and use native sql?
oracle t-sql etc?

Hi,
When you start a new report and are asked to select a datasource, choose the Oracle Server one and login to the instance you need..

On the list that includes Tables,Views,Stored Procedures there should be a Command Object option ( At least in recent versions-Not sure anymore about 8.5 since we have not used it for a couple of years)..

It allows you to use your own Sql code to get the data you need ( Using Oracle's Sql syntax - not familiar with anything called Oracle t-sql)

thanks for the post

no , I dont see the Command Object option where you suggest.

CR8.5 may not have that yet...

sorry ...thats oracle, t-sql( ms-server flavor)

Hi,
It is in XI and once you are move to that, you can use it..

Copy the actual sql code from your Sql designer entries and , after selecting the Command Object option, paste it in.

Then BO must have decided not to faze out native sql.
When seagate went to CR10 they cut out the sql designer and gave us a black box for 8.5v to 10v migration.

Im glad they went back....Sql is too damed flexible to throw out

Hi,
CR10 also had the command object option..But no automatic conversion from Sql Designer..

( Another example showing why it is a good practice, where possible, to avoid propietary solutions like that ( and Business Views, for example) when native datasource solutions exist - like Oracle's Views and Stored Procedures)
