What is the point of the Oracle Reports REP file type if
one can also execute the RDF file?

Is there a difference in the execution time required?

As I learned from the thread442-867892, REP files are needed for the backward compatibility with earlier versions of Forms, that can work only with compiled report files. Modern report servers can indeed work with both compiled and uncompiled report files. If extension is not specified, the report server looks first for REP file, and if not found then looks for RDF file which is then compiled first before running. For some complex reports compilation may take significant time. In this case it makes sence to supply for the server precompiled reports.
