Hi,

Can anyone tell me the licensing requirements for Reporting Services 2005 Report development?

I understand that anyone accessing the report manager to view a report requires a SQL Server CAL, however how is the Business Intelligence Development Studio licensed?

The Licensing FAQ on microsoft.com reads thus:

Q. Do I need a separate license to run the SQL Server tools and analysis services?
A. No, a separate license is not required. However, any device that has SQL Server tools or technologies installed must have a valid SQL Server license.

But the BIDS isn't specifically mentioned. Do you get 1 single BIDS license with each SQL Server license, or can any user with a SQL CAL have the BIDS installed on their PC?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Leigh

The problem with common sense is that it isn't that common!

BIDS would be included in SQL Server Tools.

We are about to have a conversation with Microsoft about this very thing (as well as other licensing issues to do with Vis Studio). Will post back when I get any specifics

Rgds, Geoff

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.

Please read FAQ222-2244 before you ask a question

Cheers Geoff, let us know how you get on.
