We are using GP ver. 9. Ever since I upgraded the user's workstations from windows 2000 to XP the Checks don't print correctly. I open up report writer to shift the text fields up just a hair and it end up moving up 2/8". It seems to snap to grid, at least that's the Crystal Reports lingo. Does anyone know how to move the text field just a hair or two?

If this is a graphic report, you can turn the Grid off from the Layout menu.

However, I suggest that you leave the grid on and just use the arrow keys to shift the fields a pixel at a time. This will offset the location from the grid.

This way, you can still move a grid at a time with the mouse and the offset will be maintained.

It's actually a "text" report. I found on gp support site that all you have to do is clear the check mark, go to layout move fields, save changes, and put the check mark back. I tried this and it seems to work on display, but when I print the check, it's actually moved grid width or height.
I surely hope I can resolve this.

With a Graphics report you might have to adjust all the positions. This is just trial and error.

Text reports can only go in the column and row positions that the printer supports (think of a dot matrix printer).

Thank you. I'll have to convert it to graphics report then.

When I convert the text report to graphics report, all the font size seems bigger? Is there a way to change the font size in the graphics report?

Press Ctrl-A to select all fields and the Control-D for drawing options.

Thank you, you are a great help! And so prompt. Can you also tell me where the reports are linked? I modified the report successfully, but I couldn't rename the report because I'm afraid it'll lose the link. The check report is name "something - text". Can I rename it to "something - graphic" and have it print when I run the checks?

If you want this as a Modified report which can run in place of the original, you will not be able to change its name.

The only way to change the name would be to duplicate or copy it which would make it a secondary (custom) report which cannot be used in place of the original.

Ok. So I discovered that the best way to fix the check alignment is to change the alignment figures for vertical and horizontal when printing the check. In the test environment the setting was retained. However, in the production env, the user tells me that the numbers resets to 0's again. I can only think that it's because the reports.dic file is shared among everyone in the department. Could it be permissions on the file? Or is it something else?

Make sure Preprinted Form is checked on the Report Definition window. This will remove the effect that different printer drivers with different margins can have on the report.

You will then need to add the margins into the report layout itself.

I would suggest getting the report printing in the live environment and not trying to adjust at the time of printing. Most people actually turn the system print dialog off to avoid an extra mouse click.

The "Preprinted Form" was already checked.

How do I add margins to a Text report? In my case I have to shift everything up. Currently I have to move it up -.05 and shift to right +.08. Will I be able to shift the margins by the same figures?

To move the entire report horizontally, use ctrl-A to select all the fields and then use the right arrow to move one pixel at a time.

To move the report down, increase the size of the page header and report header sections and move the fields in those sections down. You can remove white space from the bottom of the Page footer and report footer sections if they exist.
