Report Studio - I need to fix a column width

A search of this yielded zip, so here goes

Cognos 8 Report Studio

page layout has a 1 column by 3 row table

1 cross tab in each cell

i would like the first column in each report to stay fixed, or for that matter any column selectively.

Positioning properties - for every cell of column 1 in each report, i've selected 1 inch (side question is why are the other properties in the height widt setting greyed out)

White space proprties - I set to either No Wrap or Default or normal

easch of the 3 reports produce a different column width irrespective of the column width i specify - why is it being overridden

- how do I get this column to stay fixed at 1 inch
