Hello,

I have a report in which there are 3 levels of grouping. all of these have footers and are in ascending order.

SETRollup
PrelimRollup
CostCentre

However, I need the ascending order for CostCentre to override the ascending order for PrelimRollup. When I change it so that CostCentre comes before PrelimRollup, this changes the entire format of the report, which I don't want changed. How do I separate between the order and grouping without them having to be the same?

Thanks,
Allison

Well typically Sorting and Grouping go hand in hand. Group Headers and/or Footers are produced when data in a group changes; You control these changes by making sure that all data feeding the report is SORTED, so that changes in a group represent the end of one group and the start of another.

If data was not sorted, but only grouped (or sorted on other fields) then group headers/footers could appear rather random; as in the following example

1 a <---footer for a
2 b
3 b <---footer for b
4 a <---another footer for a
5 c <---footer for c
6 b <---another footer for b

In the above example, the first column is the sort field; the second column the group by field. If we're attempting to group a's and b's, the results are probably pretty meaningless.

Dont know if I've answered your question at all. If not, then the next point might help:

You can repear a Group by field, without displaying a Header of Footer; the effect of this would be to use it for sorting only. This in your example, you could have:

SETRollup
CostCentre <-- no header or footer
PrelimRollup
CostCentre <-- could have header or footer

Dont know if this is meaningful in terms of what you want your system to do, but its legitimate to do, and does effect sorting without necessarily grouping all sort fields.
