Report order

I have a number of clients who want their reports in a specific order. This order may be based on names or numbers not featured anywhere else so I have introduced a field into one of my tables called report order and I manually enter that information when inputting other data.

I then use sorting and grouping based on report order in the report structure. The problem is that if I set the field report order as a number then it won't accept letters and if I set it as text or memo then it doesn't sort numerically.

What I need is to be able to enter the report order as a number or as letters and for the reports to then sort either numerically or alphabetically.

I suppose I could have two fields as report order one for numbers and one for letters but that seems a bit messy. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to sort (excuse the pun) this?
TIA

I don't know why a field created to identify the order of records in a report would ever need letters.
