My access 97 application sometimes tells me that a particular report has no data, when I know that it does.

In fact, access 97 will display this report on some attempts.

I am wondering if it has anything to do with the bloating of the database (13MB before compacting and 8MB after). On more than one occasion, the report is displayed after I compact the database.

Does one thing have anything to do with the other and if so, what I can do keep the size down. Access 97 does not offer a compact on exit option.

Urgent responses required!!!

Have you checked the query behind the report? That's the place to start. If it's blank, your report will be blank.
Sometimes something in the query isn't right, especially if you've got more than one table. If the query is blank, try adjusting the relationships in the query itself until you find the missing data.

Yes, I had checked the query and it has records.

It's possible the report or the query might be corrupted. That would temporarily work when you do compact and repair, but it might corrupt again later on. I had this happen with a query, and once I recreated the query, the problem went away. You might try recreating the report from scratch, and if the problem continues, do the same for the query.
