We are planning on upgrading our SQL Server from 2000 to 2005, so that we can get the report writing services.

I believe this installs VB.Net as standard too. There are two things which I am unsure about and wondered if anyone can help..

1. In order to write reports from my PC, do I need to have SQL Server 2005 installed on my PC, and/or do I need to have vb.net installed?

2. When I write reports, is there a way to publish them so that other users can run them as and when they wish, changing criteria etc, without the users having vb.net or SQL Server installed on their PC? For example could they be published to an internal URL and ran this way?

Thanks

John

1. Yes and yes - you need Visual Studio installed on your PC

2. Reports are published to a report server. Users access them by default from a "report Manager" ASP utuility which can be accessed over the intranet. They can also be run from URL or many other manners (including pre run subscriptions). Only report DEVELOPERS neeed SQL Server on their machines. Users only require access to the report manager url (where security is applied to reports / report folders)

Rgds, Geoff

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.
