Hi all,

I have a problem with a report on my dbase. The report is often a few pages long with page headers and footers. The records on the report consist of various field types including a couple of memo fields.

The problem is that if either of the memo fields on the first record listed in the report is really long (over a page) the detail area of the first page of the report is blank. After the first blank page the report continues as normal, it's as if a blank page is being inserted at the start of the report!

I've checked and there are no insert page breaks turned on... keep together is switched on as thisis required for grouping of records. I turned keep together off and the blank page disappeared however all of my record grouping was messed up!

Any ideas???

Cheers in advance

Try looking at the CanShrink property for the field that displays the memo fields. Set it and the section (body, group, header) to true. This will allow the field to shrink to the minimum size needed to display the data.

Hi mstrmage1768,

Thanks for the response but I'm afraid it hasn't worked :(

Any other ideas?

Hmmmm....

What is the backend? Are you using linked tables to SQL or are the tables in Access itself? If SQL what datatype did you define the field as?
For example, in SQL if you used char(500) then the field is padded with spaces to fill the 500 no matter what value you enter. If you use varchar(500), this "padding" doesn't happen.
In Access, I am not sure that that is what happens. You can also try maybe changing the controlsource for the control in questions to something like:
=Trim([fieldname])
The trim function should "remove" any spaces and "invisible" characters at the beginning and end of the field.

I'm afraid i'm using ms access. It's really strange... i have a header at the top of the page, whenever there is a new record in the header and the first record for that header / group is a page os longer the frist page is shown as blank ....

Another thing to check is width....what is the width of the report? The little scale thingy should help. Access sets default margins of 1" on all sides, and a standard page format of 8.5"x11". This means that is your report width is greater than 6.5" (unless you changed any of these settings), you may have a "blank" page that is really the extra "width" of the first page...
