The issue in question is NOT the processing time when RUNNING the report, but rather when in DESIGN VIEW (working on the report structure/format, etc.).
I have found that when the report is based on a crosstab query, and the table is of a substantial size (say around 500,000 records or more), working on the report in design view takes "forever". Any process as simple as accessing the properties of a textbox, saving the report, etc. takes as long as 15-30 seconds -- with every move. That may not sound very long, but when the report is quite complex with a lot of formatting, calculating, etc., it can take an hour to do what normally only takes me minutes.
Like I said, this only happens when the report is based on a crosstab query and the table has a few hundred thousand records or more. If the table has hundreds, not thousands, of records, it isn't a problem. The tables are indexed, and running the crosstab query by itself only takes a second or two. (And RUNNING the report only takes a few seconds also.)
Does anyone else have this problem or have a clue what I'm talking about? And is there anything that can be done to prevent this problem?
