Reply (to outside my company) will not use default mail account

On our Groupwise Mail Accounts, we have set up

1) an internal mail account for our company (the default) called "GroupWise" and

2) an external mail account through our ISP called "Earthlink".

The problem is that when I try to REPLY to the mail sent from OUTSIDE our company, and I press the SEND icon, the mail is undeliverable, UNLESS I press the down-arrow under the send button and select "GroupWise" (even though GroupWise is the default). This makes no sense! How can I set it so that it works?

I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!
