I have always used Outlook Exchange and just got a new job as IT Administrator and my company has their own mail server, Domino and the email client is Lotus Notes, which I have never used. I need to learn replication so the employees can access the database etc. while away from the facility. Can anyone tell me in simple steps how to set this up on the employees computers?
Also how do I set up the settings so they can send and recive mail while on another connection away from the office. In outlook you just put in the pop and smtp settings with username and password I don't see anything like this on Lotus.
These are my 2 issues I am struggling with. I need to learn these quickly.
Thank you

Hello,

What version is your Server and Notes Client? You can easily handle the replication by making local a local Replca of any Address Books and the users mail file.

From the Notes Workspace, right-click the users mail DB icon, Replication, New Replica. Create the replica locally (Notes Data DIR "data\mail\xxx.nsf)

Next, you want to do the same for your Company Address Book (names.nsf), but when you create the replica (same steps as above, you want to RENAME (during creation) the file to pubnames.nsf. If you don't rename it, you'll overwrite the users Personal Name and Address Book (local names.nsf).

Once this finishes replicating, go to the replicator page and right-click the Address Book entry. Options, and make sure you only "pull" down new records. Leave the mail file as is (push, pull).

Since the user now has a local NAB and Mail DB, you will need to create a new location to handle the local mail. File, Mobile, Locations, Copy and Paste the "Office" location. Modify it and change: Basics\Location name = "Disconnected", Mail\Mail file location = local, Recepient name type-ahead = Local Only, Replication\Disabled.

Open the users default (Office?) location and schedule replication. Set Schedule (12:00 AM to 11:45 PM) every 15 mins (7 days). This allows the local NAB and Mail DB to update when they are in the office. Save and Close.

File, Preferences, User Preferences, Mail\General, Local Address Books = names.nsf, pubnames.nsf. Save and close.

In order to test, restart Notes and change to the New Location called "Disconnected" (lower right corner of screen). Send a new memo and determine if the you can resolve company email names and personal names. Upon the email being sent, Notes stores the message in the mail.box on local until it can find a connection to the server. Switch back to the "Office" location, and check the replicator page. You should see normal replication + the outgoing messages.

To answer your other question, you could setup POP in Notes, but I wouldn't recommend it. We utilize three (3) options for our users: 1. VPN, 2. iNotes (web mail - like OWA) w/ RSA Auth, 3. Dial-up with light-weight replication (rich-text). Depending on several factors, you could go any number of ways with a remote email plan.

Some of these steps may be off, since I did this from my head. If you get stuck or have any other questions, let me know. Good luck.

Rgds,

John
