Replication help

i am trying to use sql replication between 2 db servers and it does not work. I get an errot saying 'The Process could not connect to Distributor TomTest'.

When I setup a test replication between 2 dbs on the same server it worked fine.

Any ideas on what the problem is?

Also, any useful documentation on sql server replication would be useful. Books online is no good!

I have been looking at this in books online and it talks about what replication is but not the steps required to configure it in enterprise manager.

Any ideas?

An overview is provided Below



Replication consists of six main components.

1. Publisher
2. Distributor
3. Subscriber
4. Publication
5. Replication type (transcational / snapshot / merge)
6. replication agents

First of all you have to select distributor and its potential (possible) publishers for which distributor would provide distribution services.

in enterprise manager, select server then tools menu then replicaiton and select configure publishing, subscribers, and distributor wizard. For each screen options and details click help button at right bottom and read about it. Do same for each screen.

When you have configured all servers start create publication wizard from the same path as above. Select database/tables/objects required to be replicated.

At last run push subscription from the publisher server or pull subscription from the subscription server.


Replication is not simple as it looks. well, its not very complecated but need some good understanding and planning.

Follow the above steps then ask specific question.

I hope its not very complecated. For simplicity i overlooked many details.
