Hello,

I have a replication error code that I’m getting from replication monitor.

I have two sites A and B

4 DC’s total, 2 at each site.

Site B has been offline for sometime and I setup site to site replication today and received, failure code: 8614 – The active Directory cannot replicate with this server because the time since the last replication with this server has exceeded the tombstone lifetime.

So I researched this error and found these solutions.

1) demoting and promoting the DC’s at site B.
2) cleaning and reconnecting

What I would like is either more information regarding these solutions, as real life success using either of these solutions or maybe other solutions that might be better.

Thanks for your help.

Mike

demoting and promoting the dc's at site B would be my choice here, you may have to use the /force switch when you do the dcpromo to get them to demote properly. I would then ensure that they have been removed from the metadata properly and then promote them to domain controllers again.

Also do/did any of the servers at site B hold any FSMO roles??

Hi Paul,

I will research how to remove metadata.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Pagy,

No none of the DC's that I have to demote have any FSMO Roles currently.

So do I have to clean the metadata on all DC
s at both sites or just the DC's that I'm demoting.

Thanks,

Mike

once you've demoted the dc's at site B just have a look in the metadata to be sure that remnants to those servers have gone. When you are in ntdsutil and you do the 'list servers in site' bit the DC's from site B should not show, if they do you would need to continue and remove them from the metadata. Obviously if they do not show when you do 'list servers in site' then they have gone from the metadata and you are good to promote them back to domain controllers.

Thanks pagy,

I think I got it now. Thanks for taking time to explain this procedure in detail, as I have never proformed this before. I'll let you know how it goes.

Take Care,

Mike

Hello Pagy,

Everything went text-book.

Thanks again for all of your help and the link.
