Replicating icons on desktop screen

For some reason, or something thatI did and do not recall what was it, every time I start my system (Windows XP Professional), the icons that I had deleted previously, tend to replicate themselves more than one time, filling my desktop screen "to the hilt".

Is there something I can do to prevent this anomaly from happening?

well I would check for some sort of malware, as that is not normal behavior.
