Hi All,

Happy new year.

Quick question about replication between Active directory servers in different sites.

I have 3 sites and 3 AD server's (2003) (all running AD intergtared DNS)

Server 1 can access (ping) all sites. (site 1)
server 2 can access server 1 (site 2)
Server 3 can access server 1 (site 3)
Server 2 + 3 CANNOT see each other (our VPN does not allow it)

Each has its own site in AD sites and services, and they are all on there own Subnets.

How should the replication be set up

Should server 1 be set up to replicate to server 2 + server 3 and replicate from server 2 + 3

And server 2 + 3 should olny be server to replicate to and from server 1 not from each other.

At the moment i'm getting some errors and Server 2 and 3 are set to replicate from and to each other.

Also can changing the replication partners cause issues?

Hope this ramble makes some sences

Cheers

You didn't provide the information about the errors, so we can only speculate.

There isn't a right or wrong way to do replication. Business requirements and topology often dictate how replication needs to happen. Setting up sites 2 and 3 to only replicate with site 1 is perfectly ok, in theory. It all comes down to making sure that changes in site 2 (or 3) are visible in site 3 (or 2) after a reasonable amount of time. Only you can say how soon those changes need to be visible.

Hi 58sniper,

Thanks for the reply,

I'm not to worries about changes at sites 2 and 3 as all changes are done on the main site (site 1) we never add users or change settings one the other two sites.

Have you ever come accross issues deleting connections (i'm going to delete the connection between sites 2 and 3 ( this was automaticaly created when i installed AD on the server at site 3)

Cheers

I ALWAYS delete all of the default connections, and manually create the ones I need.

There shouldn't be any issues. YMMV.
