If I replace a processor on a Merlin Magix, shouldn't I just have to power up and be able to login to the console? Shouldn't the processor have software already loaded on the system?

It does, but the processor could have old programming on it. They don't make Magix processors anymore so it is a refurbished unit. Are you trying to use the 4424LD+ and not getting the prompt for system programming? If so, the programming port may have been changed. You may need to connect using Winspm and then default the processor.

No, when we plug in the replacment processor, the system doesn't com up at all.

The system will not "come up" when you install a replacement processor.

Before replacing anything - you need to back-up the programming - and - if the replacement processor has a different version operating system - you will need to perform a backup from your old processor to WinSPM - and the convert the backup to match the software version on the replacement processor. Only then can you install the new processor and perform a restore of the programming - using the converted file.

You can manually default the replacement processor - before installing it - by removing the black jumper under the two back-up batteries and/or capacitors - and leave it off for 30 seconds - then reconnect it. Reinstall the processor - and power up the system. You will see a capital F on the processor led - if the default was performed correctly.

The system will then operate in default KEY mode - until you restore your programming.
