I need to replace a server that has several SQL 2005 databases on it. I need do this without having to change any client ODBC settings or drive mappings, etc.. And with minimal downtime.

I'm thinking it might be easier to setup up the new server under a new name, and then transfer the databases over. Once everythings up and running correctly, take the old server offline and rename the new one same as the old one. Does this sound like a good idea or bad idea? Will SQL 2005 be ok with the name change? I read this Faq "ReEstablish SQL Server after Physical Server Name Change faq 962-4395". Will that work for 2005?

Thanks

yes it will. If you can't change any client ODBC settings then I would say this is your best option. You will have to rename your SQL instance as well as your server name. Then reboot.

Yes, this is your best option.
