I have an HP Pavilliion 9680C. It has a riptide audio card. The sound card is in combination with the conexant 56k modem. I want to upgrade to win XP. For that I need to change the sound card.

1) Will having a separate sound card and modem work?

2) If it does, then...how do i decide which sound card to replace it with? I'd like something average and cheap.

Any advice will be appreciated. thank you

The riptide will work in xp,early on you had to use the 2000 drivers in xp,but there are drivers available, search riptide drivers on google. most point to hp web,or driversguide.com.
