I have heard of others having to flat-out wipe and reinstall when putting in a motherboard with a different chipset.

If you change the motherboard, Windows XP will not like it. Espectially if you change chipset manufacturers (eg. from SiS to VIA - Exception 0x7D will occur).

The way to deal with this is to change the motherboard then boot from the Windwows XP CD, the select 'install' (at which point Windows should inform you that you already have an OS). Then choose 'repair'. This will re-install Windows XP over top of your existing installation, so that your 3rd party programs, documents, and settings are retained. After this you MUST visit and install all available Microsoft Updates for the Windows XP operating system, even if you had all the updates before you re-installed.

My memory is not as good as it should be, and neither is my memory.

I have forgotten more than I can remember

If its a different motherboard, I would plan on a complete reinstall.

If you have lots of information on the hard drive that you don't want to lose DO NOT follow shannanl recommendations.

The tip that J741 said will work fine! I have done it many many times.

Depending on how much different the hard ware is you might get away with doing this.

1. Bootup Windows on your old motherboard change the IDE drivers to MS drivers.
2. Powerdown system
3. Install new mobo and hook everything
4. Try and boot into Windows

If you are lucky you might get all the way into Windows and then let Windows detect all the new devices and install new drivers.

Now this trick worked like a charm under Windows 2000 but with XP it's not always the case due to XP itself being mad about to many hard ware changes.

But please DON't do a complete reinstall unless you really want to it isnt necessary.
