I need to replace some Wyse 60 dumb terminals on a SCO OpenServer system so I thought I'd just replace them with PC's running Mandrake Linux. I need to connect to the SCO box via one of the PC's serial ports. What do I need to do to get the PC to see the SCO box?

Surely it would be much easier to fit a network card in each PC and use TCP/IP?

I wish it was that easy. The SCO server is the host version, no networking in that version AFAIK. Besides, the serial wiring is already run, so it should be just unplug the dead terminal & plug in the PC's serial port.

Physically, it's simple: connect the serial ports with a null-modem cable and you are done. ee if you don't grok the wiring.

Your real problem is going to be terminal emulation. How difficult that is going to be depends on your app; some will be easier than others.

If you search for "linux terminal emulation" you'll find a lot of related material. You may have to actual buy terminal emulation software for Linux; fortunately it does exist if you need it. Tony Lawrence
