Hello
I would like to replace the first Domain Controller in my site with new hardware. I have 2 other DC's in my site one which been transfered the roles of Global Catalog, RID, PDC, Infastructure Domain naming master and Schema Master -from this server. I would like to have the new Hardware have the same name on the network that the old server had.
I would like to double check my plan with you.
1. Transfered all FSMO roles to another DC
2. Bring down the Old server
3. Rename the new server (from its temp name) to the old server name
4. Run DCPROMO
5. replicate, and transfer the FSMO roles back

Does this sound OK to you guys? Like I said I have already transferred all the FSMO roles.

Thanks for any and all help

Take down the DC you plan to remove.
Leave it down and see if it causes any problems.
Remove the instance of the Old DC from AD Domain Controllers.
Now you don't have to rename the New Server just name it the same as the Old one right of the bat.
Then DCPROMO and transfer.

Do you think there would be any issues with not having the same GUID from tht old server on the new server?

Thanks
G

It would treat it as a new server, but as long as it's promoted to a DC sucessfully I can't see what it would matter.

Thanks!!! It went off without a hitch. I had to remove it from Active Directory, Domain Controllers AND Computers in AD,

For anyone else out ther doing this, make sure you disconnect any mapped drives on the new server should ther be any. Otherwise you cannot rename the Server.
