Replacing cordless phone on NEC DS1000 system

I have a cordless phone extension on a NEC DS1000 system that was damaged. We have an extra cordless handset lying around. How can I set it up to replace the damaged handset/extension? When I plug it in, it says on the screen "Acquiring Link" very briefly, then the message goes away and nothing happens.

Thanks.
