Anyone tried replacing while system still going?.
Normaly we would power down but I have a non normal situation.

I don't see why there would be an issue but just in case.

Take top off, unplug fan connector, replace fan, plug connector in.

BTW I am ticked to see we sent a tech to site with a 3 pin fan that we took out of a 400 only to find out it was a 4pin fan on site which was also a 400.

When did they change the format and how in the world are we supposed to know?.
Is there a sheet on this or some way to tell or do we need to take everyone apart to see as it happens?

I'm pretty sure a 3 wire fan will work. The 3rd wire was the tachometer that measured fan speed. The 4 wire fans appeared from time to time. Nortel probably got a good deal on that batch.

If it throws an alarm about fan speed with the three wire fan, then that SSM card is looking for some output on the 4th wire. You'll probably get an alarm set when you disconnect the fan to replace it, but I wouldn't hesitate to try it.
