Hi Folks.

I have tried replacing the Seagate Barracuda 80GB drive with a Western Digital Blue 500gb drive, I cloned the full 80GB disk to the 500GB disk and everything seems fine. However when I boot the BCM50, it fails to start with flashing orange lights, and an occasional flash of the lower light to green.

To clone the drive i used [pre]dd if="80gb drive" of ="500 gb drive"[/pre]

Have I selected an incompatible drive or am I missing something as part of the clone process?

Any thoughts?

Hello John

Did you select the sector by sector option (assuming that it is available?).

I've used a 250 gig for a BCM 50 when testing one out, but have never used a 500 gig one as it would be a waste of disk space as only the first 40 gigs is used.

Hi Firebrid,

Yeah so my understanding is that dd against the block device will make an exact copy of the disk. I went for 500Gb as they are the smallest size 3.5inch disks available now.

What was the brand and model of disk you have used?

John

Hello John

I use a bunch of different disks.

Intel X25-M SSDSA2M080G2GC 80GB 2.5" MLC SATA SSD

Nortel Item Code label = E1721ETNZ9999 NT9T4006 05
3.5 SERIES Maxtor DiamondMax 8S SATA150 HDD 40GB

Another SATA hard disk that was used later on in BCM 50 production was a

Nortel BCM 50 Release 3.0 S/W Item Code label = NT9T4124E5 01
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 80GB SATA

I have used other sizes of Seagate Barracuda up to 250 gigs.

I've attached a guide I wrote using the Acronis tool.

I use

Seagate 500 GB ST500DN002

We use Acronis to image.

I suspect there could be a problem with cloning the 80GB drive to 500GB drive using dd, because the drive geometry could be different. Entire disk cloning using dd works if you have two drives of the same size. Cloning tools such as Norton Ghost, Acronis, Macrium Reflect, Clonezilla and similar take care of creating an appropriate partition table and then cloning partitions separately. With the BCM image having 12 or 13 partitions, this is important. Acronis is the preferred tool - it is the one recommended by Avaya and as such the compatibility is guaranteed. My guess is that Clonezilla should handle the FAT16 and ext2 partitions used by BCM50 without any problems, too.

I've found that "WinHex" does a good job, but it will create an image the same size as the original. However, as the hard disks these days are now done in TB, then it won't be much of a problem if you have an old 40 or 80 gig BCM disk.

I now keep complet images of most versions of BCM's on my main computer and just use WinHex to clone a copy.

Thanks guys,

I have sourced a 80GB Seagate ST380815AS online, I think they had to reach to the bottom of the bin and blow the dust off it.

I'm hoping that will arrive tomorrow, will try dd'ing the image to that and if it doesn't work I'll try the suggested tools above (I'm a Mac user and most of those tools are Windows based).

I'll post a update Saturday and let you know how it goes, thanks for all your helpful suggestions to date.

So after like 40+ hours using dd to copy the image to the new Seagate ST380815AS I was able to get the cloned drive working in the BCM50.

Thanks guys
