What are the general steps in replacing an SSA drive, which resides in an external 4 bay disk cage (like a D40). The system is running AIX 4.3.3. This SSA disk is running application data and not the rootvg. ANy help would be appreciated.

Thanks
-Chris

(if you want to replace the disk on running application ensure the SSA loop is closed to avoid other disk isolation)

And you have to be sure the phisical location of the disk in SSA enclosure you can find it:
- obtain disk serial number via diag and comapre it with DiskSerialNumber placed on disk label
- from diag light identification led on the disk

Disk replacement:
1. backup/move FS resides on disk being replaced
2. remove the filesystems/LVs from the disk
3. remove the "old" disk to be replaced from VG it resides in (reducevg command)
4. remove devices of the logical and phsical disk

lspv
(locate the hdiskX you removed from the VG - now it belongs to none group - you see "none" in the place of VG)

ssaxlate -l hdiskX
(to find phisical disk [pdiskY] which is in relationship with the hdiskX)

rmdev -dl hdiskX
(to remove hdiskX from system and ODM)

rmdev -dl pdiskY
(to remove pdiskY from system)

5. Remove the old disk from the SSA enslosure

6. Inserte the new disk to the SSA enclosure

7. Run config manager to configure new SSA disk

cfgmgr

8. check:

lspv
lsdev -Cc pdisk
lsdev -Cc disk
