I have a bad server and would like to know if it would be a problem to;
1. build a new server with a name close to the old one.
2. do a restore from a good backup of the old server to the new server.
3. turn the old server off
4. change the name of the new server to match to name of the old server along with the ip address of the NIC cards

If I do this will there be any problems or loss of service?

I am running windows 2003 on my servers.

You could build a new server. When you install Exchange on it, join it to the current organisation. Quite easy to move mailboxes to the new Exchange from the old one via ADU&C. When all the mailboxes are moved, retire the old exchange server.

The above is a basic overview, there are more steps as in cleanup, eg changing incoming port 25 traffic to the new Exchange server, assigning smart host and chaning bridgehead servers if applicable etc.

On the client side, when a user whose mailbox has been moved to the new Exchange box starts up their Outlook, the Exchange server address will automatically be changed in their settings.

Just one possible method.

I was actually thinking of doing it that way also. I just was curious as to whether I could just use a tape backup to restore it to the way it was easier
