I have a customer with a 2000 server as the AD server, There is also a 2000 TS as a application server for remote access and a 2003 server running SQL. I want to replace the 2000 AD server with a new 2003 R2 server. other that making the 2003R2 a backup AD server and copying all user data and running dcpromo, is there another and possibly easier to accolmpish this task? Is there a tool that I can run to perform all tasks?

ps. currently the client PC are 2000 Pro and XP Pro

Thanks,

Steve

You can't make it a DC without upgrading the domain to 2003 R2. There are several things you need to be aware of and read about first. I would suggestion checking out this list of links. Not ALL will apply to you, but many will.

Here are some links that should get you going for upgrading a 2000 domain to 2003:

Quote from the top of this article: "Several glossy Microsoft presenters have stated that all you need to do to complete a Windows 2003 Domain upgrade is run ADPREP and then upgrade away. This may work for very small / simple environments but it is definitely not good advice for most companies. After upgrading five servers in two unrelated domains and installing many fresh copies of 2003 I can say that I personally would not skip a single step in the process I have developed below."
