I have an unmanage swtich which i cannot get into because i do not have the switch user and password.. Without access to this default gateway i cannot do port forwarding or any munipulation outside the network.

i need a quick tutorial (a link to a website would be nice) of the process of installing a switch ( i don't want to tamper any network setting (other routers) within the intranet.

since a switch is hardware what type of problem can occur if i replace the whole switch?

how can i accomplish this with none or least amount of configuration towards the rest of the network?

thank
John,

If the switch is UNMANAGED, then you just plug in a replacement! There is NO login or pw! An UNmanaged switch is just that - NO management! NO config!

Just plug in what you need to connect to your LAN...

ok another question if i want to managed my network what is the easiest way? should i add a router to a top layer of the unmanged switch? dsl/modem=> ROUTER=> unmanged SWITCH

or should i replace the unmanged swtich with a manged switch
dsl/modem=>new MANAGED SWITCH=>....\
??

thanks, john

How do you define "managed network"?

Do you mean access the router from the WAN or LAN side?

Gain access to a workstation or server from the WAN side?

Are you going to have VLANs or VPNs or fixed addresses on switchports?

In regards to your post, port forwarding is handled by the gateway router, and it can provide external (WAN) access for admin functions.
