Hi there

I am looking at replacing our old existing Novell 5.1 server with a more up to date one.

I am looking for the easiest way to replace the server and all the software on the old server.

I was thinking along the lines of the following

Installing the new server with Novell 5.1 and attach it to the existing tree on the old server.

Let the NDS update the new server .

Copy the software over.

Down the old server and rename the new server the old name.

Does anybody out there know if it possible to do what I am trying to achive with the above idea.

I am used to working with nt4 computers therefore i would appreciate any responses / ideas to the above.

mw9999,

I ran into problems pulling up Slainte35's URL, came back as a doc no longer avilable. However it is. If you run into the same problem I did, just search for TID 10070726 , You only need to enter the number in their search page and go, it is there.

I can think of about 15 different ways to acomplish what you want to do, but the migration wizard is the best, and even better now that Novell lets you migrate to the same OS version (not including NW4). Brent Schmidt CNE, Network +

Depends on whether the server has NDS partition. Here is the proper way to upgrade serve and maintain NDS replica information.

Basically, you need to use "Prepare server
for hardware upgrade" under "Directory Service Option" in NWCONFIG.

Please read this

My company has been using this procedure over 3 years for more than 50 servers upgrade.

This procedure will maintain all your ID , NDS references.

And you don't need to re-replicate NDs information for slow link site.
