I need to replace a 2003 primary domain controller. It is encountering hardware problems and is old. We currently have 1 domain with a PDC and a BDC. What steps do I take to do this? I have searched and am finding conflicting information.
The new pdc will have win srv 2008 and we will eventually upgrade the bdc with 2008 as well. The pdc will also host dns and wins.
Would someone give me basic steps to accomplish this or point me to reliable information?

Thanks in advance

No such thing as PDC in 2003. Or 2008. Or 2000.....

Do a search here. This has been discussed countless times.

I did a search for "replace domain controller" and nothing shows up, which is why I posted it.

I have two 2003 domain controllers, one is a backup...what does that make the other one? The backup doesn't get hit unless the main one goes down. I would consider that primary. I am told we have a use for wins, not sure what for yet. Why did you even post something if your not willing to help.

I just learned a similar lesson the hard way. Please don't get upset with those that share knowledge. They took the time to read the posts, and even if we don't like or appreciate the answer... they did share knowledge that (at least in my case) helped save much time. It might sound trite, but cheers to those who answer, and thanks for your time.

Uh, no. That's not how it works. When there are multiple domain controllers in the same AD site, they all get used.

So none of these links were of any use to you zarkon4?

And if you want to argue PDC BDC, we got all day...but the bottom line is quite simple, as my signature states, there is no such thing as a PDC or a BDC beginning with Windows 2000. There is a PDC Emulator...but that's a different beast.

You're asking for our help...well, let us help educate you to the fact that PDC's don't exist.

Enjoy.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

WOW!!! some people's children.

Davetoo,

great post, thanks. I love the "Let me google that for you".

found exactly what I needed as I'm implementing Win2k8 into my Win2k3 environment with an upgrade to Exchange 2010.

thanks again.
